| Dyna Coils and Magnecor Plug Leads Upgrade Kit | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
As all aspects of the Ducati 2 valve motors are based on building a cost effective product (read lowest retail cost possible) nearly every component can be improved with aftermarket products. In the case of the ignition system the ignition boxes which control the timing can be upgraded with units made by Pederzini. This results in a more stable power delivery and smooths out the "lurching" at low RPMs generally dropping the low end of the usable powerband from the stock 904 motor's 4K down to 3K or so. The coils and spark plug leads are also generic and I had read of meaningful improvements being made by substituting aftermarket coils for the stock units. As plug wires degrade with age I also wanted to find replacements for those. I thoroughly researched both Nology and Dyna coils. The Nology units seem to claim more than they deliver as they do not perform any better than the Dyna coils even though they claim more. They also have a problem with certain stock ignition boxes which were in use circa 1993-1997. Many people have had their Nology coils destroyed by the cheaper design ignition boxes Ducati used during those 4 years. The Dyna do not have this problem and the Dynas are less expensive than the Nology. The pages that follow show a step by step install of the Dyna coils in the Elefant. The larger capacity Dyna coils can just make it into the bike with only 2 new holes being drilled in the mounting plate. Overall the install was pretty painless. You can read about why I think this upgrade makes such a difference here. You can read my ride test impressions here.
