The stock foam surround with the paper element removed. This entire air filter element project took about 3 hours spread over 2 days. I decided to make a UNI foam filter holder because a K&N lets in a lot of debris until it gets clogged with dirt and then it continues to filter (their main claim is that they flow more "air" and will continue to flow when other filters become clogged). Most of my riding is not in "dirty" areas and I want the freer flow of a filter design other than paper but do not want micro debris getting in. The UNI design seems like a good compromise. On trips I will take a second filter element (pre-oiled and ready to install) in case the installed unit gets clogged.
